If you asked me 10 years, 5 years, 5 months ago if I would ever have a cat - I'd probably say no. I'm a dog person but it seems 2012 is about the unexpected. I've been dying for a pet lately. And with the 3 different apartments in less than a year, I'm not sure one can fit into my lifestyle. So I decided to foster a cat with the blessing of my roommate & boyfriend. It makes sense right? New York City, small spaces, mice, easy to take care of (fingers crossed!). So last night, little Maya was dropped off. She's a bit shy and very vocal but you can tell she secretly wants to hang out. I haven't got a good picture of her yet, but I'll try to get one tonight.

After seeing Flora Grubb's vertical flowers & gardens on Design*Sponge, I knew I had to purchase a few. I ended up getting the Thigmotrope Satellite Fleet and I absolutely love them. It puts some life into my room and airplants are perfect for my city dwelling lifestyle.
My 3 brothers & sister-in-law (Dan, Val, Paul & Anette) just recently opened up their Etsy shop No Outlet Group!! These t-shirts are made by hand using eco-friendly fabrics & inks. Their opening collection includes 7 iconic Depression-era silkscreened prints.
I love reading about what designers/entrepreneurs did in the past to get to where they are now. Matt Bernson used to work as a construction worker, but now he goes to work daily in his Tribeca studio creating hand crafted, high quality shoes. Not only are the shoes eco-friendly, they're elegant and casual - perfect for any occasion. Shop here. *I love his construction inspired boot.
Know someone that is not so computer savvy and could use a little simplicity in their life? Set them up an internet buttons page, it's free and it will make their life (and your life) a little bit easier.
When living in a big city such as New York City, it's easy to meet people but it is hard to find a commonality with others and become more than acquaintances. Grub with us is trying to change that. Grub with us is giving people a kick in the butt to get out there by pairing eating + socializing. You can buy a seat at a table (at a great price) and join some strangers for a good meal. You might not walk out with your best friend but I'm sure there's great conversation - and you never know who you'll meet! Check the map to see if your city hosts Grub with us meals, if not - request it!
I love getting emails, but what I love getting even more - handwritten letters/cards. If you are a lover of cute cards & fine paper, like me, you will love letters from Lauren. Her goal is to write a letter to a friend, family member, complete stranger - anyone, each day for a year. Lauren's letters are heartfelt, concise and written in a straight line (I must learn how to do this!). It's a very inspiring blog, I think I may go and write a few letters tonight :)
Random Fact: Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, it can grow up to 3 feet a day.
I went to a BBQ a few months ago and got a first look at Bamboo Studio's plates & utensils. I honestly wanted to take my plate home with me. Their dinnerware is super sturdy, reusable, microwave safe, biodegradable & made from Bamboo. It's a great investment for the upcoming BBQ & picnic season and an 8 pack of plates will only run you $5!
If you are looking for a little color but still want to stay eco-friendly, check out these gorgeous plates - also made from Bamboo.
Fact: About 1 million plastic bags are used every minute.
I forget to bring reusable bags to the grocery store almost every time I go. My reusable bags are dinky little fabric bags, nothing like these awesome Apolis market bags. I think if I had a few of these lying around, I'd most likely be carrying one around everyday. Not only is the design perfect & simple, but they are a part of Apolis' "Bangladesh Project", a project created to help rebuild local economies and creates opportunity for the whole supply chain.
Did you know that we throw away 75% more per person than we did 2 decades ago? Pretty sad. Check out 5th Season, bags made from upcycled materials. If you'd like to make your bag a little more personal - contact 5th Season to custom make your bag out of your own clothing or even better, just donate some old items. 5% of proceeds go toward improving education systems in impoverished nations. To read more about 5th Season and how Akiki Oguchi began her journey, check out their site.
I remember seeing a commercial about TOMS about a year ago, but just recently shopped their site (they're adorable!) and noticed a friend with a pair on.For every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS donates a pair of shoes to children in developing countries. Shop their site and be sure to see how you can get involved.
